Term: Spring 2015, Jan. 27 – May 22
Schedule: TBD, 60-75 min
Teacher: Nathan Raley
Grade Level: Grades 7-12
Description: This is a semester-long course that meets for 16 weeks and 32 classes. This course is also offered as a yearlong course, and therefore this semester-long course will require more out-of-class study and longer class periods. It is designed for junior high and high school students who want to study and practice the art of debate and Socratic discussion. In this course, Nathan Raley will acquaint students with the history and tradition of debate, along with the traditional formats of formal debate. He will also train students in the more informal methods of Socratic discussion and debate that are best suited to a smaller group of students investigating a topic or issue together. Students will examine great examples of discussion and debate in textual and video media and then begin participating in debates and discussions of various kinds throughout the course.
Resources: Everyday Debate and Discussion (forthcoming, summer 2014)
