LA3-Program

A yearlong course for grades 9 and up

Latin Alive! Book 3 continues the relevant, rigorous, and incremental Latin instruction begun in Latin Alive! Book 2. The Latin Alive! series features original Latin writings, giving students access to the works of great Latin authors. As the third text in a 3-year series, Latin Alive! Book 3 is an entry point to advanced grammatical studies.

Full program includes:

  • Latin Alive! Book 3 (consumable student edition) This book is designed as a yearlong course and contains 16 biweekly chapters, divided into 3 units. Each chapter begins with the Latin motto of a college or university and includes at least one reading, with an explanation of the phrases in the reading, a glossary, and comprehension questions. Each unit ends with a unit reading (longer than the chapter readings) that includes some history on the piece, information on Latin literature, and a multiple-choice question section to check comprehension. The last unit includes readings and lessons on original Latin poetry and historical information about Latin poets. Grammar includes more in-depth study of the subjunctive mood, irregular nouns, noun and verb reviews, the gerund and gerundive, impersonal verbs, conditional statements, and a study of different kinds of clauses (purpose, result, doubting, fearing).
  • Latin Alive! Book 3 Teacher’s Edition This book includes the full content of the Latin Alive! Book 3 Student Edition, extensive explanations, an answer key, and translations, as well as teacher’s tips, additional student exercises, and unit tests.
  • Latin Alive! Book 3 Streaming Video & Audio (or 6-DVD & 1-CD Set) Author and teacher Karen Moore continues her excellent Latin instruction in the Latin Alive! Book 3 Video, which includes 16 lessons, each an average of 40 minutes. This brings the total length of video to nearly 11 hours of instruction, all taught by an enthusiastic and delightful teacher! The audio recordings feature the unit review Latin readings. The streaming option provides the convenience of instant access, as well as desktop, smart TV, and mobile viewing capabilities. Streaming access lasts for the life of the product.

The input I received [from my students] was largely positive [over other texts] about Latin Alive! Book 3. We enjoy that the translations relate to Roman culture and history, so that those topics are easier to weave into the curriculum. The mottoes are a huge hit too. I have noticed that when translations are harder to decipher the author keeps them shorter but the easier ones are longer. I appreciate that length is relative to difficulty to help us in time planning. Shannon H., Legacy Preparatory Academy
