Raising Sturdy Kids
Raising Sturdy Kids
Drawing from decades of experience counseling thousands of families, Keith McCurdy offers parents a hopeful, practical vision for raising children who are resilient, grounded, and wise. In a culture that often prioritizes comfort, happiness, and self-esteem, Raising Sturdy Kids returns to timeless principles rooted in biblical truth and common sense.
McCurdy invites parents to reorient their families around a healthy order—God first, then marriage, then children—and to embrace the vital role of healthy struggle in a child’s development. Through compelling stories and straightforward counsel, he challenges today’s dominant therapeutic mindset and equips parents to lead with clarity and calm.
This engaging and often humorous book explores the value of boundaries, the difference between self-confidence and self-esteem, and the practical ways we can shift children from consumers to contributors. It also addresses technology, entitlement, and the importance of emotional maturity. Parents will come away encouraged and equipped to raise children who are not only capable but also deeply rooted in truth and grace.

Keith A. McCurdy, Author
Keith A. McCurdy is a family and parenting educator and consultant, as well as a licensed professional counselor and licensed marriage and family therapist in the state of Virginia. He received his MA and EdS degrees from James Madison University.
Keith is currently the president and founder of Live Sturdy, LLC, and president and CEO of Total Life Counseling, Inc. He previously served as chairman of the board at Faith Christian School, a Christian classical school in Roanoke, VA. He has worked with families, children, parents, and individuals for over 30 years in the field of mental health and for many years has been a consultant and speaker nationally to businesses, churches, and schools (public, private, faith-based and within the world of classical education).
Keith provides consulting and coaching services nationally on improving parenting skills, building strong marriages, maintaining healthy relationships, leadership training, and addressing corporate stress management. He has developed and regularly offers parenting retreats entitled “Raising Sturdy Kids” to help parents operate from the correct paradigm with their children and have extended and customized this powerful program for schools and students.
His primary focus is helping others better understand how a therapeutic worldview, and often psychology itself, has worked to undermine morality, healthy family functioning, and our ability to equip our children to thrive in this world. A significant part of his work is devoted to helping parents understand the needed benefit of allowing their children to struggle to learn to do hard things.
