  • With the third decade of the twenty-first century solidly upon us, perhaps the great question for our day is “Where are the Shepherds?” Have the skills, knowledge, virtues, and wisdom that once produced men and women of character worth trusting—cultural, political, and spiritual leaders worth following—been lost forever? Have we as a society forgotten how to build these qualities into developing shepherd boys and girls?

In this audiobook version of Wisdom and Eloquence for Parents, read with clarity and warmth by Joelle Hodge, MAT, classical Christian educators Dr. Robert Littlejohn and Charles T. Evans draw from the foundational principles outlined in their seminal 2006 work, Wisdom and Eloquence: A Christian Paradigm for Classical Education to answer these questions with a resounding “no!”

Together with family and parenting counselor Keith A. McCurdy, the authors present updated selections from the original text and new content written specifically for parents, providing a compelling case for classical Christian education as the surest path to forming wise and eloquent servant-leaders who are equipped to shepherd their generation as lifelong learners, rational thinkers, creative problem solvers, and faithful Christians.

    Charles Evans, Author

Charles T. (Chuck) Evans started his career in church education ministry and pivoted to classical schooling as the founding head of Faith Christian School in Roanoke, Virginia, in 1997.

Chuck earned his MA in Liberal Studies in 2000 with an emphasis in Greek. His master’s thesis “Good Men Speaking Well: Toward a Rhetorical Pedagogy for the Modern Grade School” (Hollins University, 2000) formed much of the premise of Wisdom and Eloquence: A Christian Paradigm for Classical Learning, coauthored with Robert Littlejohn.

Chuck began consulting full time in 2006 with Paideia Inc. before founding BetterSchools LLC in 2011. He has helped dozens of classical Christian schools on projects such as expanding programs to grades 9–12, designing faculty culture, board development, and strategic and financial planning. From 2007 to 2013, Chuck was the Executive Director of the Texas Private School Association, representing over 800 accredited private schools in the Texas Legislature.

Part of the founding group of the Society for Classical Learning (SCL) in 2000, Chuck served as an officer of the SCL board for five years and editor of The Journal of the Society for Classical Learning from 2007–2009. He also cofounded the Council for Educational Standards and Accountability (CESA).

Since 2015, Chuck has been on the faculty of Vanderbilt University as Adjunct Instructor of Higher Education, Department of Leadership, Policy, and Organizations, Vanderbilt University—Peabody College (MEd in Independent School Leadership program). He teaches a graduate course module on independent school finance.

Chuck has served in his home church as a Sunday school teacher, worship leader, and elder. With seven children and three grandchildren, Chuck enjoys time with his kids and their families more than anything else. He and his wife rent a big house on the Texas Gulf Coast each summer so that everyone can spend a few days together at the beach.

    Keith McCurdy, Author

Keith A. McCurdy, MA, EdS, received his Master of Arts and Education Specialist degrees from James Madison University. He is a family and parenting educator and consultant, licensed professional counselor, licensed marriage and family therapist in the state of Virginia, President and Founder of Live Sturdy LLC, and President and CEO of Total Life Counseling Inc. He has worked with families, children, parents, and individuals for over 30 years in the field of mental health.

He previously served as Chairman of the Board at Faith Christian School, a Christian classical school in Roanoke, Virginia, and for many years he has been a consultant and speaker nationally to businesses, churches, and schools (public, private, faith-based, and within the world of classical education). He has developed and regularly offers parenting retreats entitled “Raising Sturdy Kids” to help parents operate from the correct paradigm with their children and has extended and customized this powerful program for schools and students.

His primary focus is helping others better understand how a therapeutic worldview, and often psychology itself, has worked to undermine morality, healthy family functioning, and our ability to equip our children to thrive in this world. A significant part of his work is helping parents understand the needed benefit of allowing their children to struggle to learn to do hard things.

He is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys living in the beautiful Roanoke Valley in the Blue Ridge Mountains with his wife.
