As the second text in a 3-year series, Latin Alive! Book 2 (LA2) continues the clear, relevant, and incremental Latin instruction begun in Latin Alive! Book 1 (LA1). LA2 features Latin readings from the time of the Roman Empire, thus integrating the study of Roman history, literature, and civilization with students’ language studies. This revised edition emphasizes an approach to language learning that draws from a variety of pedagogical tools taken from the best of the traditional focus on grammar as well as from the immersion method.
In LA2, students will:
- Review grammar introduced in LA1 and learn new grammar concepts throughout 20 chapters
- Add to their repertoire of Latin pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs, including comparative expressions
- Be introduced to the passive voice in all tenses; past, present, and future participles; and dependent clauses with the indicative
- Encounter a truly multidisciplinary approach to language through a wide range of exercise types, from morphology to fill-in-the-blank and from translation to speaking
- Discover the influence of Latin language and literature worldwide as they engage with national mottoes from around the world
- Read adapted selections from great Roman authors, such as Cicero, Vergil, Ovid, Suetonius, Tacitus, Pliny the Elder, Pliny the Younger, and more
- Enrich their knowledge of Roman civilization through articles by Dr. Karl Galinsky of the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Christopher Schlect of New Saint Andrews College, and Dr. Tim Moore of Washington University
- Continue building translation skills by reading adaptations from Latin literature that will help prepare them for academic opportunities such as the National Latin Exam, the Universal Latin Exam, and a Latin Advanced Placement class
This teacher’s edition includes extensive explanations, an answer key, and translations, as well as additional student exercises.
